Mobile Post Office
To continue a Post Office service to the community, a Mobile Post Office will visit the Gorsley Baptist Church (upper) car park on Wednesday 2.30-3.30pm and Friday 2.15-3.15pm. This mobile facility offers everything that can be found in a normal Post Office.
To accompany the Wednesday service, the Baptist Church have arranged for the Lighthouse (building adjacent to car park) to be open, with refreshments being served – a great opportunity for the community to use the Post Office and stay and have a chat over a tea or coffee.
The ‘Hub’ Vision
Gorsley is not alone in the current challenges facing rural communities – we all lead busy lives, daily commuting to places of work, more frequently communicating by the phone or social media as opposed to face to face… Without knowing it our communities and the services it offers suffer and the spaces where communities come together, get to know one another and support one another are lost. The ‘Hub’ vision recognises that individually people want and need community and require spaces and services to enable it to happen.
Community Shop & PO
The proposed shop and Post Office would be a ‘community’ enterprise that would primarily be run by volunteers and overseen by a paid part-time manager. The intention would be to ensure that the shop covers its costs for it to be sustainable but not to make substantial profits and therefore keeping prices reasonable.
We recognise that a village shop will not be a place someone does their only weekly shop but will offer the items people need daily, in an emergency or what is not offered by a larger supermarket chains.
Adjacent to the shop, the Church is looking to develop their premises to also include a Coffee Shop. In a rural community it is recognised that people have limited
opportunity to meet up and get to know each other – the coffee shop will offer such a space.
With the development likely to take more time than that to open the shop, in the interim the Church is looking to set up a smaller coffee area serving refreshments for shop and church users.
The potential premises identified for the shop overlooks the adjacent field which the Baptist Church purchased in 2013 with the intention for it to be used by the community.
Plans are underway to build a play area for young children to enjoy, whilst their carers enjoy a coffee or purchase something from the shop.
